Comment Replies

It seems that when people post comments and I reply,my replies don't show up for some reason.

So:-

Bill Tweedie.

I must confess to somewhat enjoy buying stuff and fiddling about with it.
I have buggered up loads of stuff in my time.
Given my time over again you could stuff nursing, engineering would be my forte.

Satellite Success !!

This posting is for anyone who like me is a satellite TV virgin.

If you are an old hand at this lark then this is not for you so you could go and paper the back bedroom like the wife has been asking you to do for months.

After getting the repaired dish back thought I would give it another try at getting it to work at home.

The thirteen year old teenager on the Maxview stand made it all seem very easy,23 degrees or so inclination, point it roughly south, adjust azimuth slightly ( see I am getting into this ) and Astra 2 will be spilling forth its juicy goodies in a jiffy.

Decided to take it to Mr.Roscoe's garden who has a more open view than ours but despite farting about for an hour including Mr.Roscoe dancing about with the damn thing on his garage roof we got precisely sod all apart from a false alarm from Hotbird ( that's Hotbird,a satellite, not a Hot Bird )

I then looked on my phone at a web site ( Sat-Direction Site ) where you rather cleverly put in your postcode,an aerial map of your house pops up along with exact inclination and azimuth readings.

It turned out that we should have been pointing about 35 degrees east of south not directly south give or take a degree or so as we had thought.

After adjusting to this setting, abracadabra we had TV,sadly it was Strictly Come Dancing but it was at least a picture plus we had umpteen other channels to pick from.

The saddest thing is though there was no sign of Say Yes To The Dress or Babenation but there's time yet.

Well Done Maxview & Isabella.

Further to my satellite woes, this morning I received my satellite thingy back from Maxview all fixed free of charge.

They only received it yesterday so a very quick turnaround, well done to Maxview.

At the Manchester show I ordered a new draught skirt as if anyone recalls I ripped the original one to shreds at Durham.

I ordered 5.5m ( the original is 3.5m ) as I thought I might as well extend it to the front of the van.

Arrived on the day I specified, post free, and they have sent just short of 6m.

Well done Isabella, even though I have bought so much Isabella stuff I keep geting asked by the lady at shows if I am working my way through the catalogue.

It's a pity some other companies don't have similar customer service.

Kitchen Cupboard Completed

Finally got round to finishing the adaptations to the kitchen cupboard.

When we were at the Manchester show I intended to purchase a Fiamma Omni Stop to secure the plates in the cupboard above the sink after removing the original plate rack..

Fiamma Omni Stop

Fiamma usually have a stand but they weren't there, fortunately I found virtually the same thing on the Seaflo accessory stand for only £2,more than a third off the Fiamma price ( £6 or £7 or so ).

For some reason the plate rack is secured with a screw at the front but a rivet at the back so this had to be drilled out to remove the rack, why not two screws Lord only knows.

When the job is complete one hole can be covered with the circular cover that came off it ( you did save it didn't you ) if you want to cover the upper hole extra adhesive discs are available from Bailey.

The runner of the plate holder is then stuck to the dividing wall with he provided adhesive strip and the securing piece slid along it to secure the plates.

I think it is better than the Fiamma model as the plate holding piece is wider at the end,one thing might have made it neater and that would be an end stop on the end of the runner.

This is  view of the whole revised cupboard with the cup holder secured at the bottom.

Some pieces of non-slip matting finished the job.

Bottles and other tall items can fit neatly where the glasses are in the picture.

As nothing is screwed to the van or the cupboards it can all be removed if need be and reverted to the original.

The screws that held the cup holder and plate rack I reaffixed in the holes then they won't get lost.

You can secure the plates laid flat with the securer placed vertically ( as in the Omni Stop link ) but our plates were too wide and the door wouldn't shut properly.

I also treated SWMBO to an Isabella dish rack as she is always complaining about a lack of one.

Satellite Woes

As we have an Avtex TV with a built in satellite decoder I decided to enter the world of satellite television in the van

Took a bit of advice from Caravan Talk and all I needed to do was to buy a dish,LNB,tripod etc.,plug it in and away we go,what could go wrong.

So last Thursday saw us at the Manchester caravan show where I lashed out on a Maxview set up for a discounted price, all seemed straightforward in the setting up stakes according to the spotty faced youth on the stand.

Friday I decided to give it a trial run at home, set the dish up outside the back door, plugged into TV,nothing, not a whisper.

Now according to the instructions there should be a clear line of site to the satellite not obstructed by trees, houses etc.

Now to be fair I didn't have this but I thought I might get some sort of signal weak though it may be just to show the damn thing was working, but no,nowt.

Kept trying but with the same result, then to cap it all whilst I was in the house the sodding thing toppled over, put a small dent in the dish and removed the wire connections from the LNB which naturally I couldn't replace properly.

So one day old and it is buggered.

Rang Maxview to appeal for help, shut at one o'clock on a Friday, obviously,so I have resorted to e-mail to enquire about repairing it.

All this so SWMBO can watch "Say Yes To The Dress",mind you on a previous TV trial using a dish fixed to a neighbours house we did notice you can pick up "Babenation" via Astra 2 so it may be worth it in the end.

Will see what Maxview say on Monday.
